Both of these techniques
can be called whitework. That is, they are traditionally worked on
white fabric with white thread. Drawn thread work entails
cutting some of the threads, usually in one direction and actually
removing them from the fabric. Stitches are then worked at the
edge of or within the drawn area to secure and decorate the open
area.
Pulled thread work
is not cut. The working thread follows a regular pattern and is
pulled so as to distort the threads in the background pattern in a
deliberate and consistent pattern. The thread and the background
fabric work together to produce a new background texture. These
textured areas may be borders, fillings or overall designs. |
